INFORMATION TEXTS

 Understanding informational texts

Information texts are factual texts on particular subjects - people, places and things. Its primary purpose is to inform the reader about the natural or social world. They can be found in different text types such as brochures, leaflets, news articles, textbooks, etc. They are usually written in present tense and text is organised in headings and sub-headings.

Almost 4.9 million people in NSW volunteer, contributing more than 1.5 billion hours which is valued at approximately $127 billion.

Volunteers provide an irreplaceable service. Volunteering benefits communities, the economy, and increases social cohesion.

Research reveals that volunteering also benefits volunteers themselves. It reduces symptoms of depression, improves self-reported health and lowers mortality. Volunteering expands people’s social networks, provides opportunities to gain valuable experience, and enables people to develop new skills which can lead to employment.

Volunteering makes a difference.

What are you waiting for? If you’re interested in volunteering click on the ‘Volunteer Now’ button below to find an opportunity near you.

Why volunteer?

With busy lives, it can be hard to find time to volunteer. However, the benefits of volunteering can be enormous. Volunteering offers vital help to people in need, worthwhile causes, and the community, but the benefits can be even greater for you, the volunteer. The right match can help you to find friends, connect with the community, learn new skills, and even advance your career.

Giving to others can also help protect your mental and physical health. It can reduce stress, combat depression, keep you mentally stimulated, and provide a sense of purpose. While it’s true that the more you volunteer, the more benefits you’ll experience, volunteering doesn’t have to involve a long-term commitment or take a huge amount of time out of your busy day. Giving in even simple ways can help those in need and improve your health and happiness.

Instructions are sentences that tell people how to do something.

They are written or spoken as ‘command’ sentences and include a bossy (imperative) verb.

Written instructions are often numbered so they are given in the order that they should be done.
